Denton-Lake City Members volunteer with Hearts for Homes, rehabilitating homes for low-income seniors.

The vision of Hearts for Homes is a Christian Outreach providing hope and dignity through home rehabilitation and maintenance, affording low-income seniors 60 and older a safe, comfortable, and well-functioning home in which to age in place.

They provide no-cost home repairs to very low-income elderly homeowners, ages 60 and older, in the Denton County area of Texas. The organization does this by partnering with organizations such as the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club, which provides volunteer labor and materials for various qualifying projects throughout the community.

Over the past few weeks, our members have completed various projects, both small and large, that have provided the necessary rehab and maintenance work for local area homes of seniors participating in the program.

We are proud of member Brian Glenn for his work with Shelter Box.

Brian recently received a promotion in his Shelter Box Duties.

He is still a volunteer response team member for ShelterBox International and will be in the Philippines for the next three weeks, responding to the earthquake damage in northern Cebu.

When he returns, he will start a new job with ShelterBox USA as the Senior Manager for Domestic Responses. In this position, he will develop a program to respond to US disasters like tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires. We'll work with Rotary districts to fill in the gaps not met by FEMA and local agencies.

Local city and county governments recognized Rotary's End Polio Now efforts. Denton County Commissioner Andy Eads (PDG) and Denton Mayor Bill Heidemann ( PP-RCDLC) each signed proclamations representing their respective organizations.

Several members from the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary club gave up a beautiful Saturday in October to paint a neighbor's home for Habitat for Humanity.

"Service Above Self":
This is Rotary's main motto, highlighting the ideal of unselfish volunteerism and serving the needs of others. Our club participates in numerous service projects throughout the year. This project exemplifies in spades the commitment our members have to Service Above Self. Pumpkin Patch Festival was a complete success.

Pumpkin Festival at Shiloh Field Community Garden celebrates the fall season and brings the community together. This event featured pumpkins for sale, hayrides, face painting, and guided tours of the garden, offering a fun and educational experience for all ages. We also had face painting, live music, and garden-grown items for sale. All proceeds from the pumpkin sale will benefit Rotary International's PolioPlus program.

We had the honor of presenting a special check to Habitat for Humanity! Pictured here is Texas State Representative Richard Hayes for Texas House alongside the CEO of Habitat for Humanity; a wonderful moment of community support.

It should be noted that in addition to this financial donation, our Rotary club members have volunteered many hours on various Habitat for Humanity projects on our community.

We are proud of our community partnership.

Members met Saturday, September 19th to get ready of this year's Dictionary Project.

We gathered early for breakfast. Then we placed a Rotary label, including the four-way test, on the first page of the dictionary, with 25 volunteers, including three from the UNT Rotaract Club and two mother/daughter teams from NCL (National Cherry League). We labeled around 2500 Dictionaries.

Our next step is to schedule meetings with the schools where we are providing dictionaries to 3rd graders.

Thank you to the Rotarians and friends for attending Saturday, 9/13/25

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

As we pick up the final flags of the 2025 season, we are grateful for our 2851 flag recipients. Because of the revenues derived from these subscriptions, our Rotary club has been able to support local and international service projects such as Shelterbox, Denton Police Youth Summer Program, Dictionaries for 3rd graders, Kids Against Hunger, Fill the Pantry, BSA Troop 192 Argyle, 424 Lake Dallas, Friends of the Family, Street Side Showers, Interfaith Ministries, Adoption Fair, Spirit of Christmas Food Drive and other similar projects throughout the year.

Members of the Denton Lake Cities Rotary Club helped celebrate the 2025 Dog Days of Denton

We set up an information tent to promote Rotary and our community service projects in Denton County, which, of course, now include our furry friends. A fun time was had by all. Visit the 2025 Dog Days of Denton photo carousel of the event above.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to work the 2025 Flag Work Day.

Part of the service we provide to flag subscribers is ensuring that the flag displayed on their property each holiday is in the best possible condition. This means periodic inspection of each flag and replacing damaged staff and flags where needed. Today is one of those Flag Work Days. Thanks to all the members who worked so hard to make our subscribers of the flag in front of their homes.

Denton Lake-Cities Rotary Club member Pat Smith has been an active member dedicated to serving our communities.

Is it any wonder that Pat, his 85-year-old mother, Judy Smith, and Terry Smith were recognized recently by the Denver Record Chronicle for their work in the makeover of 45 feet of her Adopt-a-Spot on Sherman Drive?   According to the Denton Record Chronicle, Judy Smith is something of a creative legend in Denton. For full story about Judy Smith and her community service-minded sons, click the article here.

Lake Lewisville, just south of Denton Texas, has the most drowning incidents in a year of any lake in Texas.

Two-thirds of drownings are "good swimmers."
Drowning rates triple at age 15 in natural water.

The LV Project raises awareness for drowning prevention and specifically advocates for use of life vests on lakes.

Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club members partner with Young Men Service League Pacesetter Chapter from Flower Mound, Texas to build Greenhouse Tunnels at Shilo Gardens

This Greenhouse Tunnel is the first of three to be built.
Open House ceremony led by District Governor Andy Eads

Shilo Gardens serves the food insecure in our area. First, they can come out and reserve a plot at no cost and garden for themselves.  We have many families from around the world do that. Second, we distribute the produce to local food pantries and other nonprofits that feed people. In 2023, we distributed 66,000 pounds of produce and 3,600 dozen eggs (43,200 eggs if you are doing the math).
Denton Lake City Rotarians deliver dictionaries to 3rd graders.

Thank you Denton - Lake Cities Rotary, a morning club, for providing our third graders with dictionaries! Mr. Becker and Mr. Davenport gave each third grader a dictionary Monday morning. They also spent time with them looking up new words and discovering all of the other tools in this fantastic dictionary!

Denton-Lake Cities Rotary proudly supports a Denton, Texas annual tradition with a $2,500 donation.

Denton's  Day of the Dead Festival is an inclusive, family-focused festival, celebrating culture and community, that pays homage to the many wonderful things the fall has to offer: the goodness of the harvest, the Dia de los Muertos holiday, and all things Halloween!

The Rotary Club of Denton Lake Cities proudly supports the UNT Rotaract Club with a $500 Donation.

Rotaract is for young professionals between the ages of 21 and 35. Rotaract clubs hold formal meetings in person or virtually, usually every two weeks, that feature speakers, special outings, social activities, discussions, or visits to other clubs. Club members gather for service project work, social events, or professional/leadership development workshops on designated days.
