It is the mission of the Special Education Services Department to actively respond to the needs of students with disabilities and their families by providing supports that will encourage and foster empowerment, independence, and inclusiveness in all aspects of the educational experience in school and beyond.
In the Denton Independent School District, each student with a disability has the opportunity to participate in a free, appropriate education designed to meet his or her individual needs. DISD provides a continuum of student-centered, supportive services to meet the needs of eligible students between the ages of 3 and 21 with disabilities.
The Special Programs accommodate physical needs, emotional, behavioral, academic and psychological needs. In 2022, 4458 special needs students were served. That number grew to 5554 in 2024.
DISD currently has 32K students, 4600 employees, 45 campuses in 18 communites where 57 languages are spoken. Current challenges include meeting staffing needs to accommodate the growing numbers.
