Every fall, for the last 22 years, the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club hands out a dictionary to third graders at schools throughout the Denton County area.

This year we are distributing 2700 dictionaries to the 3rd-grade classes in 25 schools in Denton ISD, 2 in Sanger, 3 in Argyle, 3 in Lake Dallas, and 2 in Krum. Pat Smith, DLCRC Community Service Chair, and Cathy Henderson, Youth Services organized the team to put the Rotary stickers in every dictionary. The stickers identify the dictionary as a gift from the Denton Lake-Cities Rotary Club.

Grady Ray, a Denton-Lake Cities Rotarian, was busy distributing dictionaries to the 3rd graders at Lake Dallas Elementary recently. The Dictionary Project is a nonprofit organization endorsed by Rotary International. The Dictionary Project’s goal is to assist all students to become good writers, active readers and creative thinkers through the gift of their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. In spite of the vast resources available via the Internet, there is still a need for something as simple as a print dictionary.

Allen Chick with the Denton-Lake Cities Rotary Club was out distributing dictionaries to the third graders at Clear Creek Elementary and Butterfield Elementary in Sanger, TX. For many children, this is the first book they have ever owned.

Cathy Hendersen with principal Frank Perez, are standing with 6th graders that first received their dictionaries back when they were in the 3rd grade, and they are still using them!

This year the DLCRC plans on distributing 2700 dictionaries, to 25 schools in Denton, 2 in Sanger, 3 in Argyle, 3 in Lake Dallas and 2 in Krum. Coordinating the distribution of dictionaries to 25 schools requires a scheduling wizard and many Rotarian volunteers. Distribution started October 26, continues through November and will likely have the last few schools in January depending on the school event schedule.
